Summary
This article provides a general overview of how BES/Blackberry services work, and more specifically with 01.com's Zimbra services. It addresses 10 of the most frequently asked questions about Blackberry.
Who is RIM?
Research in Motion (RIM) makes Blackberry devices, and the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) which enables full, native, over-the-air (OTA) sync for Blackberry devices to groupware servers, including Microsoft Exchange, Novell Groupwise, IBM Louts Notes, and most recently, Yahoo!'s Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS).
What does over-the-air mean?
OTA means Blackberry devices synchronize with corresponding mailboxes on the Zimbra server wirelessly using your respective cell phone company's data/internet connection. You don't have to connect the Blackberry via a cable or blue-tooth to your desktop to sync, you need only have access to your phone company's BES network, which typically comes automatically with an unlimited data plan. Wherever you have cell phone coverage and a Blackberry, you can receive and send email, and sync changes to your calendar, contacts and tasks. Email is "push" email, and changes synchronize in real time to the Zimbra server, typically in less than a minute.
What does native and full sync mean?
"Native" over-the-air synchronization of email, calendar, contacts and tasks between Blackberry devices requires a BES. Native in this respect means you use the built-in software, without any additional software for your Blackberry device, nor the Blackberry device's web browser. Email synchronization means "full" sync, including sent mail, and for example, when you read a message on your Blackberry, it shows as read in your inbox in Zimbra, and also in any desktop mail software you may be using, such as Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird.
Is a BES necessary for full, native Blackberry sync?
Without exception, affirmative! BES runs on Windows Server 2003, and for large, high-performance installations, also uses the Microsoft SQL database. Not only an authorized Zimbra partner, 01.com is also a Blackberry Alliance Partner. We help organizations to deploy their own BES to sync to their own Zimbra servers. We also maintain BES servers for the use of clients within our Zimbra cloud, so that they can avoid the costs of running their own servers, and just pay a periodic extra fee to use our BES servers.
How do I get started, and what does BES service cost with 01.com Zimbra hosting?
Once you have signed up for service using our secure order form, you'll receive an activation email in less than five minutes, including login information both for your Zimbra admin control panel, and your first Zimbra mailbox, your own. You'll also gain access to our secure online help desk, where you can use our enterprise ticketing system to request activation for your Blackberry devices.
Activation typically occurs within a day of requests, results in email to the mailboxes for which you've made the request for Blackberry activation. Within the activation email is a code you use with your Blackberry Enterprise Activation, and within about 10 minutes, you're able to send/receive email on your Blackberry. Address book sync can take longer, depending on the size of your address book.
- Personal hosting month-to-month: $7/month + $35 activation (includes Zimbra Mobile/ActiveSync)
- Business hosting month-to-month: $9.99/month + $25 activation (Zimbra Mobile/ActiveSync extra)
- Business hosting annual terms: $99.99/annually + $0 activation (includes Zimbra Mobile/ActiveSync)
May I test/use Blackberry service during my 30-day free trial/demo?
Affirmative. We welcome your testing.
Do I need to load any software onto my Blackberry to use your service?
No.
Do I need any special Zimbra licensing to use the Blackberry sync service?
Yes.
You must have Zimbra Mobile, also known as ActiveSync at 01.com,
enabled for each mailbox with which you'd like to sync a Blackberry in
the 01.com Zimbra cloud hosting environment. Zimbra Mobile is provided
free-of-additional-charge with Business hosting purchased at an annual
term, for an additional $1/month for Personal Hosting, and for a
variable extra charge for Business hosting purchased at a
month-to-month term, based on volume. Please see the business hosting
calculator.
Do I need to load any software onto my BES to make it sync with a Zimbra server?
If you have your own BES, and Zimbra server, you must use BES for Exchange, and load the Zimbra Blackberry Connector.
What does beta status mean for Zimbra's native BES sync?
Please see our public FAQ on beta support for Zimbra BES.
