With the release of the iPhone firmware 2.0 on July 11, 2008, you may wirelessly sync mail, contacts and calendar to your iPhone. This is also known as over-the-air sync, or OTA sync, and the iPhone uses a Microsoft technology called ActiveSync to do it. 01.com's Zimbra servers support push email for the iPhone and ActiveSync using a Zimbra licensing option called Zimbra Mobile. Zimbra Mobile is optional for some accounts and included with others, depending on the term selected.
Note that currently ActiveSync, a Microsoft technology, only enables synchronization of one calendar, your default calendar, Zimbra release 5.0.9, due shortly, will include a system to enable mutli-calendar syncover the air for iPhone users, and we believe that at some time in the future the iPhone will also support CalDav for calendar syncing, which enables multiple calendars to be viewed and shared, free/busy, and other features.
Pricing
Zimbra Mobile's ActiveSync is included free-of-charge with business hosting accounts ordered with a prepaid annual term. This new, discountedannual pricing option was introduced onto our secure order form July 16, 2008, accompanied by revisions to our business hosting calculator and website. You may upgrade your month-to-month account to annual terms automatically by using the billing manager. Note that only clients who have initially ordered service with Annual terms automatically have ActiveSync enabled. If you upgrade from month-to-mont to annual terms, you will still have to request mobile device activation, per the following description.
If you have ordered business hosting with a month-to-month (monthly) term, you must enable ActiveSync (aka Zimbra Mobile). Do this by requesting mobile device activation for each mailbox for which you'd like to enable ActiveSync. Once you've submitted the request, our help desk will activate the Zimbra Mobile license for your mailbox(es) and notify you when setup is complete, typically the same day, and often within an hour. For clients with month-to-month terms, pricing to enable ActiveSync is from $2 to $3 extra monthly depending on volume, and there is a $10 activation fee for each mailbox you enable.
Backup!
Before creating your account, create a backup of your calendars and contacts as well as your iPhone settings.
Instructions
(Full, illustrated instructions available at this knowledgebase link for existing 01.com clients).
On the iPhone, click the "Settings"button.
Click on "Mail, Contacts, Calendars".
Select "Add Account".
Chose the option for "Microsoft Exchange".
Under the Email section put in your full email address.
Username should also be your full email address. For the password section enter your Zimbra email account's password. The description should also be your full email address.
Once you have these fields complete, click the 'Next' button on the top right hand corner. It will verify the account information and give you an error that it cannot verify the certificate. Click the 'Accept' button.
You will now see a field to enter your server information. To locate your specific mail server, open a web browser on a computer and navigate to: https://mail.01.com/ and login to your Zimbra account.
Once logged in, note that the URL has changed from https://mail.01.com/ to the mail server your account is located on. For example, 'mail-1.01.com'.
Enter your server address in the Server field on the iPhone and press 'Next'.
It will then ask if you want to sync mail, contacts and calendars. Select the items you want to sync using the on/off buttons.
Click "Save". (Please note that all contacts and calendar information will be wiped from the phone and the information in your Zimbra account will replace it.) The phone will now pull all your data from the server and will wirelessly sync data from this point.
To set your iPhone to use push email (automatic, quickly sending email as it's received to your iPhone), enable it by going to:
Settings > Push
Note that when you enable Push, it will drain the battery faster than normal. To help alleviate the impact of Push on your iPhone, you might try also dimming your screen to the lowest level comfortable for use.
