Question:
I'm interested in using Zimbra for our organisation with two domains. I would like to know whether it is possible to send from both domains if I am using a desktop client (mainly mail.app) without configuring two accounts ie. when I set the account up in mail.app I just enter ben@domain1.com, ben@domain2.com in the email address field. Then when I create a message I get a drop down with both addresses in for me to choose from.
Also, how would this work with mobile devices, i assume I would only be able to send from one domain but which one would it be, is there a primary domain?
Many thanks.
Answer:
- Yes, you can send from both domains. This is straight-forward in the Zimbra webmail interface, where you can select from a drop down menu as to which account you want to send from. Zimbra allows you to create as many personas, aka identities, as you like. These identities currently sync to Outlook 2003/2007 using the Zimbra Outlook Connector (ZCO), and many other mail clients support identities you can set up manually, including the popular Thunderbird. As far as Mail.app, it's not quite as obvious, but it remains straight-forward. In Preferences >> Accounts >> Account Information, enter a comma-separated list of adresses in the Email Address field. This enables you to choose a "from" address with new mail.
- With mobile devices, it can be either, but only one can be supported at a time. By default mobile devices will use your primary domain and email address. If you want to use a secondary domain (a domain alias), we can configure a canonical address, and your mobile device, such as Blackberry or iPhone, will send "from" that canonical address instead.
